Board rips into WCPSS proposal

June 24, 2005

The Apex Board of Commissioners adopted a strongly worded resolution Tuesday night opposing the Wake County Public School System’s proposal of imposing mandatory year-round schools starting in 2006.

Mayor Keith Weatherly said he did not object to year-round schools and understood that many families prefer year-round schedules.

But Weatherly said forcing children to attend year-round schools without giving parents a choice was not in the best interest of area families.

“The affects could be disastrous,” said Weatherly. “Families would be disrupted, especially if families have more than one child and they are on different schedules.”

Commissioner Bill Jensen said his son attends a year-round school and it works well for his family.

“But the mandatory aspect of it is not right,” said Jensen. “Especially is you have high schools and junior high schools still on (the traditional calendar) while elementary schools are year-round. It will cause (problems) for families.”

It resolution states that the town board “deplores this egregious affront” to students and families and opposes the school system’s “misery-inducing proposal.”

WCPSS officials claim the plan will help ease the burden on the many overcrowded schools in the area.

I'm really tired of hearing about this issue. What solution provides the best education for the least cost? Whatever it is then ALL schools should be switched to that plan. Case close.  Parents that don't like what's being offered can put their kids in private schools and if they can't afford that should be very thankful for what's being provided by all those being taxed to suppor it.
