Bingo supporters hit jackpot

The drawn out bingo saga finally ended last week when the town council voted 3-2 to allow the game at the community center.
Councilmen
Mike Jones and Bryan Gossage, Mayor Keith Weatherly, and the entire
planning board disapproved of allowing beach bingo.
They argued
that it was not proper for the town to sponsor a “game of chance” and
wanted a private company to run the activity somewhere else in town.
“I’m not opposed to beach bingo,” said Jones. “I’m opposed to the town actually sponsoring and running the activity.”
“There is nothing inherently evil with bingo,” said Weatherly. “But the town shouldn’t be engaged in sponsoring it.”
But
councilmen Bill Sutton, Gene Schulze and Bill Jensen all voted in favor
of it. The town planning staff also recommended its approval.
“I
respect other people’s views,” said Schulze. “But beach bingo is
totally legal and should be offered just like any other activity.”
Bingo
is legal in North Carolina if the prizes are less than $10. Cary, Holly
Springs and Raleigh already offer the game to its senior citizens.
The game will be held in Apex the first and third Wednesday of each month from 1:30 to 3 p.m.
