Hello,

My family and I are looking to relocate to the area in July 2010. I have daughter that will be going into 8th grade and another one that will be going into 5th. I have been reading a lot about the year round schools, magnet, and traditional. I would definitely prefer a traditional calendar year, is there a way to "choose" this option? I love everything about Wake County, but I am starting to get "scared" away after reading about the schools and the constant redistricting. Is this all true?

You are never forced to pick the year round option. You can always pick the traditional option no matter where you live.  Everybody has two schools they pick from in their neighborhood. One school is traditional and  the other school is year round.  The choice is yours.   We tried both options and now have settled on the traditional school in our area: but we did the choosing. They have changed to this ruling in the last year or so.

Thank you! that makes me feel much better! In general are the schools good in Wake County, from a parent's prospective?

I moved to NC almost 2 years ago from the north - where year round schools do not exist.  My daughter - who was going into 8th - had a choice and despite the fact that she was quite dismayed at the thought of going year round - when we took her to Salem Middle in Apex to check it out, she fell in love with it and decided to go there.  That was one of the best decision we made.  Fantastic school!!!!  I cannot say enough about the teachers and students there.  Now she is in traditional in high school because they do not have year round - and again - not a problem at all.  Basically the choice is yours - and what suits your child, your work - etc. Good luck - and BTW - we LOVE it here in NC!!!!!
